SERVPRO Works Hard to Salvage Properties in Port Washington  After Flooding

When Point Washington homes suffer a disaster like what we have dealt with recently, it can be overwhelming. Time is critical though, and homeowners need to take advantage of every second by contacting a professional restoration company.

By quickly removing water, SERVPRO helps stop further flood damage in Point Washington homes and alleviate current damage. We start with commercial grade pumps to remove standing water when large amount are in rooms of the house. If local power is unavailable, we maintain an extensive number of portable generators in our equipment inventory to ensure uninterrupted electrical support. In the case of large disasters, we can trailer in large diesel-powered generators. Pumping is only the first task though.

Next, we remove items of personal and structural property when necessary from inside the home. We do this to prevent staining the carpet with wood varnish or color dyes that run when the fabric absorbs too much water. Removal also reduces the chance of wood swelling or splitting from too much water. Our remediation specialists set up dehumidifiers to begin drawing water out of the affected property. This method removes it quickly but causes no harm to the items. Lowering the humidity also reduces the chance of mold growth in the home.

As SERVPRO team members attempt to restore the furniture, others bring in extraction wands to remove water from carpets and wood floors. By doing this quickly, we can prevent warping on the floors and stop the process of delamination in carpets. Warping can be a minor twist in the wood that does not affect the other floorboards. If it is very severe, warping forces the floorboards on either side to twist and separate from the floor frame. That can force SERVPRO specialists to remove the non-salvageable planks.

Delamination occurs when the carpet is soaked long enough that the upper and lower layers begin to separate. It happens because the excess water softens the glue and the pieces begin to pull away from each other. If we notice that delamination has started, our technicians use a combination of dehumidifiers, air movers, and space heaters to dry the carpet without pulling the upper layer, like an extraction wand. This process takes longer, but it does save the homeowner from replacing the carpet, with some luck. We can only try.

These tasks are only the first in the process developed by SERVPRO of N. Okaloosa, Walton, Holmes & Washington Counties. We take every precaution to dry your home and property quickly, but with mitigation and restoration in mind, not a replacement. If you need our services, call us today at (850) 267-0746.
